Our best life lies outside of our comfort zone. The comfort zone is the place where average dwells. There is a sense of security that the comfort zone gives us. We can stay here in safety and be active and secure while living a nice, average life. This is the path most people take and the reason that most people are mediocre. However, we are built for more.
I don’t know anyone that started their journey in life with the hope of becoming average. We settle for average. We choose average because it is comfortable and safe, not because it is our destiny. We are born to succeed and grow to greatness, but most people get derailed at some point and give up on their ultimate desires and dreams. Why do we settle for average? There are thousands of reasons why people give up on themselves. Ultimately, we give up because we lack the grit to go beyond average and fight for greatness.
We have to do the work and fight to achieve our best life. How do we do this? Refuse to live in the comfort zone. Challenge yourself daily and rise to your challenge. Do these 3 things each and every day to make sure you are getting out of your comfort zone.
- Go Beyond – There are two types of failures in this world. Those that don’t do what they are told, and those that do nothing else. Do what you need to do and then some. Go beyond what is necessary and make your work exceptional. Focus on the details in your tasks and take pride in everything you do. Great accomplishments come from doing the routine and mundane tasks extraordinarily. When we are on point with the fundamentals of the tasks we are accomplishing, great opportunities present themselves and we are ready for them.
- Build Grit – Grit is the combination of passion and perseverance. We choose how tough and gritty we are every day. It comes from how we approach and react to every situation that we encounter. We need to grow grit by having a passionate interest in our endeavors, practicing effectively to gain experience and stretch our goals, knowing our purpose (Why), and keeping our ultimate vision always in our sights.
- Failure + 1 – We fail daily. Never let a failure be final. Everytime you fail, create the habit to act with a “Failure + 1” response. This is something we do in our off season workouts with athletes. On certain exercises, we will prescribe the number of repetitions as “Failure + 1.” When we do this we expect the athletes to do the exercise until failure, take a five second rest and do one more rep. We do this to teach our kids that they can succeed after they fail. This is an important life lesson. We need to train ourselves to get up after we get knocked down and conquer failure. When we make perseverance a habit, our goals are less daunting and always achievable.
