Now this is the law of the jungle –
As old and as true as the sky;
And the wolf that keeps it may prosper,
But the wolf that shall break it must die.
As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk,
The law runneth forward and back –
The strength of the pack is the wolf
And the strength of the wolf is the pack!
-Rudyard Kipling
We cannot be a success on our own. We need a team. All great accomplishments come from a group of people working collectively toward a common goal. In some cases, individuals get the credit. But rest assured that behind every great individual achievement is a team that helped to make it happen. Sir Edmund HIllary was the first person to successfully climb Mount Everest. He gets the credit, but a team of over 400 people supported his effort to make it to the peak of the mountain. If he had tried to climb the mountain by himself, he would have failed. Hillary knew that he could not do it alone. He needed a team to help him achieve the impossible feat.
The mission of the team/family must always supersede my personal agenda. The team makes the individual great and the team is always supreme. There is nothing better or more fulfilling than working together for a common goal. This is the essence of team and family. To laugh, cry, sweat and bleed together in the quest for something bigger than yourself is special and unique and where great accomplishments happen. When our goals are bigger than my goals is when we truly make progress in our organization, team and family. When we put the team’s goals first, we tend to achieve our personal goals quicker and more efficiently than we would if we did it alone.
Putting the team first is our greatest strength in a fight because it gives us an inner strength to know that someone has my back and is fighting for the same things I am. There is power in working together and sharing experiences. This is where the culture of a team, organization or family is built. Through the hard work, tests and trials that we face in our goal quests, we come together and build a synchronized energy that makes us a strong force in which to be reckoned. We are better when we work collectively.
