We should always be happy if we are chasing worthy goals that we are passionate about. It is easy to choose happiness when we are doing the work that moves us to our goals. Taking positive action towards what we want in life gives us hope and determination which allows us to enjoy the process. Making the choice to be happy gives us energy and motivation to keep pushing ourselves.
On the contrary, being satisfied means that we are no longer looking to grow. When we are satisfied, we are at the end of a journey and have nowhere else to go. This is a pitfall for a lot of people when they reach a certain level of success. They feel comfortable and get into a routine of behavior that is designed for maintenance and not growth. At this point, we have reached our peak and it is only a matter of time until our success diminishes.
Choose to be happy. Happiness comes from actions in the present and gives us hope for the future. Beware of being satisfied. Satisfaction has a finality to it that does not allow for future prosperity. It is a landing place, and as long as we are still on this earth, we need to grow. Too often, we stop growing when we achieve a goal instead of reflecting and setting a new goal. When this happens, we get passed by others that continue to grow. This is the biggest danger for us when we are successful. We need to always look for improvement regardless of our situation.
All great leaders that I have been associated with and have studied are humble and continue to grow throughout their career. They are all positive and optimistic by nature. However, they all feel that there is more for them to do and never become satisfied with the status quo. Great leaders get better daily because they have character, strive for perfection, sweat the details, behave with consistency and challenge themselves. These are the key attributes to building on success and reaching our full potential over the long haul.
