If we are born to succeed, why doesn’t everyone succeed? Furthermore, why do people fail and become unhappy? These are the questions that pessimists pose to optimists. The answer to these questions is as obvious: People quit. This is not a nice or politically correct way to put it, but it is the truth. Everyone can find success. It might not be our original goals, but we can accomplish adjusted goals.
Great things happen when we live with PMA and keep pressing forward toward the mark. We are in control of our destiny and choose our path in this life. We are born to succeed; choose to succeed, then work tirelessly to that end.
ADJUSTING SAILS
A friend of mine had a terrible childhood. He was one of five children, his father was an alcoholic and died very young, and his mother was unable to support the family.
Unfortunately, the children were separated and placed in foster homes. My friend dropped out of school and did nothing to further himself even though opportunities were available to him. He eventually went through a divorce.
My friend’s brother, although experiencing the same childhood, educated himself and obtained an excellent job. He has a close family and a wonderful home.
Both brothers give a similar answer when asked why their lives turned out the way they did:
“You’d turn out this way too, if you had a childhood like mine.”
Neither one of the brothers
could change the past,
but one of them adjusted his sail!

I came upon this little story a few years back and it made an impact on me right away. I couldn’t believe how true this example is in our world. As I read it, I thought of at least a half a dozen examples in my world, both positive and negative, of people with similar circumstances. I suspect that all of us can do this. We either use our present and past situations as crutches or as stepping stones. It is our choice as to what we do with the circumstances we are in. There is always a reason for failure and there is always a path to success. When we believe that we are born to succeed, we find a way in spite of our circumstances.
