-The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor. -Vince Lombardi
-DIA PHORON: “Excellence” is a great word! It has been used in many forms throughout our country in recent years as a goal or a condition we would like to achieve. Many excellence awards have been given to schools, businesses and agencies. Ron Williams, a long time postal worker, shared with me a little Greek phrase – Dia Phoron. It is the Greek phrase for excellence. The meaning is what excited me. It simply means “Follow Through.” Lots of people have great ideas and little follow through. Do you want to reach excellence in your life? Then try a little Dia Phoron. -Don Essig
Excellence comes from planned and consistent action. It is never given; it must be earned. This is why I like to Greek term for excellence, Dia Phoron, which translates to “follow through” as talked about in the quote above. To follow through implies that excellence is transforming ideas into reality. It is action over intention and comes from attacking and achieving goals with no hesitation and a singleness of purpose. Set goals, attack, and finish.
Excellence demands that we move forward with positive action. When we start to get complacent and comfortable, we must push to the next level. Complacency is the greatest enemy. It is a terrible trap and dethrones a champion long before an opponent beats them on the field or in the business world. When we rest on our laurels, get comfortable and take it easy, it is only a matter of time until we become mediocre.
When we demand excellence in our attitudes and actions by living up to the high standards we set for ourselves and everyone in our team, we destroy the doubt and negative thinking that allows us to limit ourselves from the achievements that are out there for us to accomplish. We all have far more potential than we give ourselves credit for, and we can rise to great heights when we believe in ourselves and then work purposefully towards our goals. Our standards guide us to greatness and allow us to break the chains that hold us back.
